Fall is the best season for streetwear. It's cool enough for hoodies and heavy cotton, warm enough that you're not buried under a coat, and every outfit gets to have layers. It's also the season where outfits go wrong — too many bulky pieces stacked on top of each other. Here's a simple system that fixes that, plus eight outfits to steal.
The three-layer system
Every good fall outfit is built from three layers, each doing a different job:
- Base: a tee that sits close enough to layer under things. Midweight to heavyweight cotton, relaxed or boxy.
- Mid: the piece that sets the vibe — a hoodie, overshirt or button-up.
- Outer: a jacket for colder days. Optional in early fall.
The trick is contrast in weight and texture. Pair a thick hoodie with a thin jacket, or a light shirt over a heavy tee. Two heavy layers together is where bulk comes from.
The fall color palette
Washed and earthy tones do the heavy lifting: charcoal, black, oat, olive, khaki, faded blue and deep red. Washed finishes (mineral, snow, vintage) look especially right in fall because they add depth without adding pattern. If you want the details on each finish, see our guide to garment washes.
8 fall streetwear outfits
1. The heavyweight tee + open overshirt
A boxy heavyweight tee with a drapey shirt worn open over it. Wide denim, skate shoes. This is the early-fall uniform. Try the KITSUNE Boxy Tee under the ALBUM Lyocell Camp Shirt.
2. Frayed hoodie + straight denim
A hoodie with hand-frayed edges adds texture that a clean hoodie can't. Wear it with straight-leg jeans so the shape stays simple. The THE PARTY Sunfade Zip Hoodie with the SHINOBI Straight Leg Denim is an easy pair.
3. Tonal fleece set
Matching hoodie and joggers in one color family. It's the easiest outfit you'll ever put together and looks deliberate. See the EMBER Snow Wash Hoodie and Joggers.
4. Hoodie under a jacket
Plain heavyweight hoodie, hood out over a denim or work jacket. Keep the hoodie graphic-free so the layers read clean — the EMBER Hoodie under the FILLER ARC Denim Jacket is made for this.
5. Waffle knit + cargos
Texture replaces pattern. A mineral-wash waffle tee with olive or khaki cargos is a strong September-into-October fit. Try the RŌNIN Waffle Knit Tee.
6. Varsity jacket + boxy tee
A two-tone varsity jacket over a plain heavyweight tee and wide jeans is the most fall thing you can wear. See the ENSŌ Varsity Jacket.
7. Graphic hoodie, everything else plain
A big back graphic is a whole personality. Let it be the only statement: solid sweats, clean sneakers. The BRB DYING Hoodie does all the talking.
8. Tee + sweatpants + cap
For lazy Sundays that still leave the house: heavyweight tee, snow-wash sweatpants with a raw hem, and a corduroy cap. The VOID Cap adds texture that fits the season.
Fall layering mistakes to avoid
- Two long layers. A long hoodie under a long coat hides your whole shape. Crop one of them.
- Everything the same weight. Mix heavy and light pieces.
- Too many graphics. One statement piece per outfit.
- Ignoring the hem. Frayed, raw and cropped hems layer better than long, ribbed ones.
