Forty-eight corners. One way up. IROHA is a mountain pass drawn as a topographic map: a vermilion road climbs through 48 hairpins, and every corner carries the next kana of the iroha poem, the way Japan’s most famous switchback roads number their bends. いろは (iroha) is the poem’s first three kana, and it also means “the ABCs, the basics.” Its opening line, 色は匂へど 散りぬるを (iro wa nioedo chirinuru o), says the colors are fragrant, yet they scatter: even the brightest colors fade. That impermanence is the idea behind 無形 (mukei, “formless”). On the back, the map, a big いろは with 48 CURVES / ONE WAY UP, the poem running vertically and a label strip with the 無形 FORMLESS seal. On the front, a small roundel reads い · IROHA · CORNER 01 / 48 on the wearer’s left chest. Printed in bone, sumi black and vermilion on an army green body.
