If you've shopped for a "heavyweight tee" lately, you've seen numbers like 240gsm, 300gsm or 400gsm next to the price. That number is the single best clue to how a shirt will drape, how long it'll last and whether it'll look like a $10 multipack or something you actually want to wear on repeat. Here's what it means and how to use it.
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It's the weight of one square meter of the fabric. More grams means more yarn packed into the same space, which usually means a thicker, denser, more structured shirt. You'll sometimes see the same thing in ounces per square yard: roughly, 200gsm ≈ 5.9oz and 400gsm ≈ 11.8oz.
GSM isn't the whole story — cotton quality, knit and finishing all matter — but it's the fastest way to compare two tees you can't touch.
The GSM scale, in plain English
- Under 160gsm — lightweight. Thin, soft, often slightly see-through in light colors. Think basic multipacks and promo shirts.
- 160–220gsm — midweight. The everyday tee. Breathable, drapes close to the body, good for hot weather and layering.
- 220–280gsm — upper midweight. Noticeably more substance. Holds a shape without feeling heavy. A great all-season sweet spot.
- 280–350gsm — heavyweight. The streetwear standard. Thick enough to stand away from the body, with a clean, structured silhouette.
- 350gsm and up — super heavyweight. Almost sweatshirt-like substance. Boxy, sculptural and built to last for years.
Why heavyweight tees look better
A heavier fabric doesn't cling. It falls straight from the shoulder, which is exactly what gives oversized and boxy fits their clean shape instead of a sloppy one. Heavier cotton also:
- Isn't see-through, even in white or light colors.
- Holds its shape after washing — collars and hems are less likely to twist or wave.
- Ages better. Washed and faded finishes look intentional on thick cotton instead of worn out.
The trade-off: heavyweight tees are warmer and take longer to dry. That's why the "best" GSM depends on how and where you wear it.
Which GSM should you buy?
For a structured, boxy look: 350–400gsm
If you want that thick, stand-away-from-the-body fit you see in streetwear lookbooks, go heavy. The SHINOBI and KITSUNE Heavyweight Boxy Tees are cut from 400gsm cotton with a drop shoulder and a wide body.
For an everyday heavyweight: around 300gsm
300gsm is the most versatile heavyweight: substantial, but comfortable from fall into spring. The VOID Heavyweight Cotton Tee sits right here — oversized, drop shoulder, with a quiet ensō print on the back. Our kanji tees, RINNE, KIOKU and UTSUSEMI, are 300gsm too.
For warm weather or layering: 240–280gsm
Lighter tees breathe better and layer under shirts and jackets without bulk. The VOID Vintage Washed Distressed Hem Tee (240gsm, frayed hem) is the lightest in our line, and the ALBUM Mineral Wash Boxy Tee (275gsm) sits just above it.
GSM and fit work together
A 400gsm tee in a slim cut will feel stiff. A 180gsm tee in an oversized cut will look limp. The best pieces pair weight with pattern: heavy fabric in boxy, drop-shoulder shapes; lighter fabric in relaxed, drapier cuts. When you're comparing, check both the GSM and the flat measurements — our size guide lists chest, length and shoulder for every style.
Quick FAQ
Is higher GSM always better quality?
Not automatically. A well-made 240gsm tee can outlast a poorly made 300gsm one. But in general, higher GSM means more durable fabric and better opacity.
Do heavyweight tees shrink?
Pre-washed or garment-washed cotton shrinks much less. Wash cold and tumble dry low (or hang dry) to keep the fit consistent.
Are heavyweight tees too hot for summer?
300gsm+ can feel warm in high heat. For summer, a lighter tee in the 240–275gsm range is the better pick.
The bottom line
If you want a tee that looks expensive and keeps its shape, look for 280gsm or more. If you want comfort in the heat, stay in the 240–275gsm range. Either way, the number on the tag tells you more than the brand name does.
