RAIJIN 雷神

The drummer in the storm clouds. RAIJIN 雷神 is the Japanese god of thunder. Folklore says the rumble overhead is him pounding the ring of taiko drums he carries on his back. He has a partner: Fūjin 風神, the wind god, who carries the winds in a bag over his shoulders. Edo-era artists painted the two as a pair, and they've been working as a team ever since.

Our Raijin leaps out of the clouds facing you, inside a full halo of mitsudomoe-marked drums, with gold lightning cracking out in every direction. The art is original, drawn in the Edo woodblock and Rinpa style: a sumi key line, flat fills and scrolling clouds. The big back print carries the full scene with 雷神 and “RAIJIN · GOD OF THUNDER” below it. A small 雷神 kanji with the red 無形 (“formless”) seal sits on the chest.
